SUMMARY:South Florida Symphony Orchestra Presents Joachim\, Simon\, Mozart and Rimsky-Korsakov at Tennessee Williams Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Timeless classics meet bold new voices as South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO)\, led by award-winning music director and multi-generational Key West Conch native Maestra Sebrina María Alfonso\, celebrates Black History Month with a standout program. SFSO will present the anticipated Florida premiere of GRAMMY® nominee Nathalie Joachim’s Had to Be\, an intimate exploration of memory and identity\, performed by rising cellist Seth Parker Woods and the orchestral premiere of Carlos Simon’s Four Black American Dances\, a vibrant work filled with spiritual depth. Completing the program\, Mozart’s “Haffner” symphony bursts with celebratory energy and elegant precision\, while Rimsky-Korsakov’s crowd-pleasing Capriccio espagnol sparkles with irresistible Spanish rhythms on Saturday\, February 21\, at 7:30 p.m.\, at the Tennessee Williams Theatre at The College of the Florida Keys (5901 College Road).\nHaitian American composer Nathalie Joachim’s Had To Be draws on Black Dandyism – a cultural movement blending European and Black American male fashion to convey style\, status\, and identity – as well as broader African diasporic influences\, including Caribbean musical traditions and New Orleans second line celebrations. The three-movement concerto was written for three-time GRAMMY-nominated cellist Seth Parker Woods\, described by The Guardian as “a cellist of power and grace” with “mature artistry and willingness to go to the brink.” \nHad to Be is positive\, prideful\, and radical all at once. It represents the perpetually colorful and complex intersections between race\, class\, gender\, power\, and style. It honors what it means to be Black and continuously choosing to be free. By coincidence\, or perhaps to no surprise\, Woods has topped the Best Dressed Lists in Variety\, Texas Monthly\, and OC Register. \nCellist Seth Parker Woods is a versatile artist and advocate for contemporary music\, having premiered numerous concertos written for him\, including works by Tyshawn Sorey\, Julia Adolphe\, and Rebecca Saunders\, in addition to Nathalie Joachim’s Had To Be. His GRAMMY-nominated\, autobiographical work Difficult Grace has been performed to critical acclaim at major venues including 92NY\, CAP UCLA\, and the San Diego Symphony. Woods has appeared at Carnegie Hall\, the Kennedy Center\, and Konzerthaus Dortmund\, among others. Since 2022\, he has served on the faculty of USC Thornton School of Music and was appointed Robert Mann Chair in Strings and Chamber Music in 2024. He has also held residencies with the Kaufman Music Center and Seattle Symphony and received the 2022 Chamber Music America Michael Jaffee Visionary Award. \nSFSO is also proud to present its orchestral premiere of Four Black American Dances from GRAMMY-nominated African American composer\, Carlos Simon\, the composer-in-residence for the John F. Kennedy Center. \nAdding to the varied program\, SFSO will perform Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Symphony No. 35 “Haffner\,” a four-movement vibrant\, celebratory symphony written in 1782\, to honor Mozart’s friend\, Sigmund Haffner\, and his rise to nobility in Salzberg. \nConcluding the evening is the crowd-pleasing Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio espagnol\, based on Spanish folk songs and dances\, and filled with vibrant rhythms that whisk audiences off to exotic\, far-off places of the imagination. \nSFSO’s 28th season of “Juxtapositions” explores beauty in contrasts\, where the bold and the sublime intersect\, and timeless masterpieces share the stage with today’s most compelling and celebrated musical voices. This season’s performances burst with color and power from the sun-drenches skies of Mendelssohn’s “Italian” to Sibelius’ soul-searching Violin Concerto to Beethoven’s luminous Piano Concerto No. 4 and Dvořák’s Bohemian Eighth. \nSFSO’s Florida Keys Masterworks season of Juxtapositions runs from January through March 2026 at the Tennessee Williams Theatre in Key West. The first concert took place in January\, with two remaining in the series. \nTickets are on sale now beginning at $35 (plus ticketing fees) and two concert subscription packages are still available from $59.50. Subscribers receive a 15% discount off single ticket prices. Tickets may be purchased by visiting southfloridasymphony.org\, or keystix.com or by calling (305) 295-7676. \nFor additional information\, visit southfloridasymphony.org\, call (954) 522-8445 or email\ninfo@southfloridasymphony.org

SUMMARY:Beauty and the Beast JR. at American Heritage Schools
DESCRIPTION:American Heritage School’s Broward Campus lower school students will perform Beauty and the Beast JR. at the main Stage Theater on Thursday\, Jan. 29\, at 7 p.m. and Friday\, Jan. 30\, at 7 p.m. \nBased on the original Broadway production that ran for over thirteen years and was nominated for nine Tony Awards\, and the Academy Award-winning motion picture\, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast JR. is a fantastic adaptation of the story of transformation and tolerance. Disney’s Beauty and the Beast JR. features some of the most popular songs ever written by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman\, along with new songs by Mr. Menken and Tim Rice. \nThe classic story tells of Belle\, a young woman in a provincial town\, and the Beast\, who is really a young prince trapped under the spell of an enchantress. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved\, the curse will end and he will be transformed to his former self. But time is running out. If the Beast does not learn his lesson soon\, he and his household will be doomed for all eternity. With many fun supporting roles allowing students to play objects inside the castle\, this \”tale as old as time\” is filled with spectacular costume and set opportunities.

SUMMARY:Festival of African American Spirituals to Honor Rev. Pauli Murray
DESCRIPTION:Festival of African American Spirituals to Honor the Legacy of the Reverend Dr. Pauli Murray\nImmigration and Social Justice Ministries and Trinity Cathedral Miami host sacred gathering of music\, scripture\, and reflection \nOn Saturday\, January 24\, 2026\, at 10:00 a.m.\, Immigration and Social Justice Ministries of the Episcopal Church in Southeast Florida\, in partnership with Trinity Cathedral Miami\, will host a Festival of African American Spirituals and readings honoring the life\, faith\, and legacy of the Reverend Dr. Pauli Murray. \nHeld at Trinity Cathedral Miami\, the festival will celebrate a sacred tradition deeply rooted in American Christianity. African American spirituals emerged from the lived experience of enslaved Africans and became vessels for biblical storytelling\, prayer\, resistance\, and hope—passed down through generations as expressions of faith and resilience. \nThe program will feature musical contributions from Trinity Cathedral organist Andrew Cooper and the Reverend James Bell\, organist and choir director at Church of the Incarnation. Readings will include excerpts from voices that shaped the moral and spiritual fabric of the nation\, including Thurgood Marshall\, Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, and the Reverend Dr. Pauli Murray herself. Scripture and prayers from the Book of Common Prayer will be woven throughout the morning. \nPauli Murray\, an Episcopal priest\, civil rights activist\, legal scholar\, and poet\, was a pioneering voice for justice whose work influenced generations of leaders and movements. This festival offers an opportunity to reflect on Murray’s legacy through the shared language of song\, scripture\, and communal prayer. \n“All are welcome to this gathering of remembrance\, resilience\, and praise\,” the Venerable J. Fritz Bazin shared.

SUMMARY:PAW Patrol™ Adventure Play at the Museum of Discovery and Science
DESCRIPTION:Kids and families can now play and save the day with the heroic PAW Patrol™ pups\, at the brand-new PAW Patrol: Adventure Play traveling exhibit presented by Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital\, Florida Prepaid College Savings Plan and Chewy VetCare\, opening September 12 at the Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS). Based on the hit preschool series PAW Patrol\, produced by Spin Master Entertainment and airing on Nickelodeon\, this interactive exhibit gives kids and their grown-ups an opportunity to run rescue missions and work together to overcome challenges in a fun and immersive environment. The exhibit runs through January 10\, 2026.\nFamilies will visit Adventure Bay with a group of eight rescue pups. Each pup is inspired by a real-world job like a police officer (Chase)\, a firefighter (Marshall)\, a construction worker (Rubble)\, a fearless pilot (Skye) and more. Just as the heroic pups\, who believe \”no job is too big\, no pup is too small\,\” work together to protect the community on the TV show\, families will work together to save the day with a can-do attitude. In the process\, kids learn about different jobs within a community and how those real-life professionals coordinate to keep people safe and happy.\nEach of the pups has special skills\, gadgets and vehicles to help them on their rescue missions. In the exhibit\, families are invited to pop on a pup pack containing their own imaginary tools and check out the lay of the land from the lookout tower. They can head to Jake’s Mountain and scope things out near the snowy slide to see if anyone is in trouble. They can also board the PAW Patroller\, push buttons\, and drive it up the mountain to help Rubble and Everest rescue a snowboarder stuck in the snow. Those with a taste for foodie adventures can whip up tasty treats in Porter’s Café and help Adventure Bay win the Tallest Cake Competition by stacking cake layers as high as they can. Families can also cruise Adventure Bay aboard the Sea Patroller\, steering it to rescue baby seagulls and turtles. \nThe hands-on\, immersive PAW Patrol: Adventure Play exhibit is a fun way for the whole family to learn bravery and heroism\, with exciting stories. The whole family will learn how to combine their skills to problem-solve together and save the day. \nWanna Be Weekends in October and November: No Job Too Big!\nMODS will extend the PAW Patrol: Adventure Play experience with Wanna Be Weekends\, taking place every Saturday and Sunday in October and November. These themed weekends feature engaging\, hands-on activities highlighting real-life community heroes and STEAM-based careers. From designing rescue vehicles and building homes to meeting local police officers\, firefighters\, first responders and even learning how to be a pilot\, families will discover how teamwork\, compassion and problem-solving shape the world around us. Thanks to support from the JetBlue Foundation\, young aviators will have the chance to explore flight science and aviation careers through special programming and guest speakers. \nOn select days\, Chewy VetCare will also host an interactive Vet Clinic\, where children can step into the role of animal caretakers by practicing empathy and learning how to care for pets and other animals in need. \nEach weekend brings new partners\, fresh adventures and opportunities for children to imagine how they can make a difference just like the heroic pups of Adventure Bay. \nPAW Patrol: Adventure Play was produced by The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis in partnership with Nickelodeon. The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is a nonprofit committed to creating extraordinary family learning experiences across the arts\, sciences\, and humanities that have the power to transform the lives of children and families. \nPAW Patrol: Adventure Play is included with admission to MODS.
