SUMMARY:South Florida Symphony Orchestra Presents Joachim\, Simon\, Mozart and Rimsky-Korsakov at Tennessee Williams Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Timeless classics meet bold new voices as South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO)\, led by award-winning music director and multi-generational Key West Conch native Maestra Sebrina María Alfonso\, celebrates Black History Month with a standout program. SFSO will present the anticipated Florida premiere of GRAMMY® nominee Nathalie Joachim’s Had to Be\, an intimate exploration of memory and identity\, performed by rising cellist Seth Parker Woods and the orchestral premiere of Carlos Simon’s Four Black American Dances\, a vibrant work filled with spiritual depth. Completing the program\, Mozart’s “Haffner” symphony bursts with celebratory energy and elegant precision\, while Rimsky-Korsakov’s crowd-pleasing Capriccio espagnol sparkles with irresistible Spanish rhythms on Saturday\, February 21\, at 7:30 p.m.\, at the Tennessee Williams Theatre at The College of the Florida Keys (5901 College Road).\nHaitian American composer Nathalie Joachim’s Had To Be draws on Black Dandyism – a cultural movement blending European and Black American male fashion to convey style\, status\, and identity – as well as broader African diasporic influences\, including Caribbean musical traditions and New Orleans second line celebrations. The three-movement concerto was written for three-time GRAMMY-nominated cellist Seth Parker Woods\, described by The Guardian as “a cellist of power and grace” with “mature artistry and willingness to go to the brink.” \nHad to Be is positive\, prideful\, and radical all at once. It represents the perpetually colorful and complex intersections between race\, class\, gender\, power\, and style. It honors what it means to be Black and continuously choosing to be free. By coincidence\, or perhaps to no surprise\, Woods has topped the Best Dressed Lists in Variety\, Texas Monthly\, and OC Register. \nCellist Seth Parker Woods is a versatile artist and advocate for contemporary music\, having premiered numerous concertos written for him\, including works by Tyshawn Sorey\, Julia Adolphe\, and Rebecca Saunders\, in addition to Nathalie Joachim’s Had To Be. His GRAMMY-nominated\, autobiographical work Difficult Grace has been performed to critical acclaim at major venues including 92NY\, CAP UCLA\, and the San Diego Symphony. Woods has appeared at Carnegie Hall\, the Kennedy Center\, and Konzerthaus Dortmund\, among others. Since 2022\, he has served on the faculty of USC Thornton School of Music and was appointed Robert Mann Chair in Strings and Chamber Music in 2024. He has also held residencies with the Kaufman Music Center and Seattle Symphony and received the 2022 Chamber Music America Michael Jaffee Visionary Award. \nSFSO is also proud to present its orchestral premiere of Four Black American Dances from GRAMMY-nominated African American composer\, Carlos Simon\, the composer-in-residence for the John F. Kennedy Center. \nAdding to the varied program\, SFSO will perform Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Symphony No. 35 “Haffner\,” a four-movement vibrant\, celebratory symphony written in 1782\, to honor Mozart’s friend\, Sigmund Haffner\, and his rise to nobility in Salzberg. \nConcluding the evening is the crowd-pleasing Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio espagnol\, based on Spanish folk songs and dances\, and filled with vibrant rhythms that whisk audiences off to exotic\, far-off places of the imagination. \nSFSO’s 28th season of “Juxtapositions” explores beauty in contrasts\, where the bold and the sublime intersect\, and timeless masterpieces share the stage with today’s most compelling and celebrated musical voices. This season’s performances burst with color and power from the sun-drenches skies of Mendelssohn’s “Italian” to Sibelius’ soul-searching Violin Concerto to Beethoven’s luminous Piano Concerto No. 4 and Dvořák’s Bohemian Eighth. \nSFSO’s Florida Keys Masterworks season of Juxtapositions runs from January through March 2026 at the Tennessee Williams Theatre in Key West. The first concert took place in January\, with two remaining in the series. \nTickets are on sale now beginning at $35 (plus ticketing fees) and two concert subscription packages are still available from $59.50. Subscribers receive a 15% discount off single ticket prices. Tickets may be purchased by visiting southfloridasymphony.org\, or keystix.com or by calling (305) 295-7676. \nFor additional information\, visit southfloridasymphony.org\, call (954) 522-8445 or email\ninfo@southfloridasymphony.org

SUMMARY:Ivy Stranahan 145th Birthday Tea at History Fort Lauderdale
DESCRIPTION:History Fort Lauderdale invites the community to celebrate the life and legacy of pioneering educator\, philanthropist and founder Ivy Stranahan during its Ivy Stranahan Birthday Tea at noon on Tuesday\, February 24 in the historic New River Inn. The tea event commemorates what would have been Ivy Stranahan’s 145th birthday and honors her lasting contributions to education\, preservation\, and the cultural foundation of Fort Lauderdale. Guests will enjoy an elegant afternoon of tea\, crumpets and light bites in one of the city’s most iconic historic landmarks with special guest Mary Cromartie Morris. \nAs an outspoken advocate for the Seminole Tribe\, Stranahan taught them English\, was responsible for building their first school and instilled practical skills such as how to use a sewing machine. Her humanitarian efforts eventually helped the Seminoles to set themselves up as a business\, allowing them to organize themselves as the Seminole Tribe of Florida\, Inc. in 1957. In 1911\, she helped to found and initially lead the Fort Lauderdale Woman\’s Club. In 1916\, Stranahan served as the first president of the Women’s Suffrage Association of Florida and later founded the local Audubon Society and was active in the Fort Lauderdale Garden Club continuing to oppose the growing commercialization of her beloved city. She organized the first group of Camp Fire Girls in the city and was a member of the exclusive 1919 Study Club. She is credited with founding the first Broward Red Cross Chapter in 1918 and was treasurer for Provident Hospital which served the Black community before Broward General was integrated. She was also a founder of the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society in 1962. \nAttendees will have the exclusive opportunity to view a curated selection of objects and artifacts from the Stranahan Collection\, including photographs\, personal papers and letters\, ledgers\, clothing and accessories\, books\, and ephemera donated by Ivy Stranahan to History Fort Lauderdale. SUMMARY:‘No Seasoning’ Art Exhibition Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:The Copperbridge Foundation\, in partnership with NAEMI\, presents No Seasoning\, a historic group exhibition that explores racial discrimination\, marginalization\, and the layered stigmas faced by artists living outside traditional cultural\, social\, and institutional norms. \nNo Seasoning is a historic group exhibition presented at the Copperbridge Foundation headquarters\, featuring the work of seven Afro-descendant Cuban Outsider artists. Curated by independent curator and art critic Elvia Rosa Castro\, this exhibition marks the first presentation of its kind in Miami. \nCastro describes the exhibition as a “Ten-Minute Stop\,” offering viewers a pause for authenticity and unfiltered expression amid a world influenced by standardization\, censorship\, and lingering colonial structures. \nFeaturing works by Pedro Pablo Bacallao Perdomo\, Gloria de la Caridad García\, Misleidys Castillo\, Isaac Crespo\, Daldo Marte\, Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara\, and Martha Iris Pérez Santana\, the exhibition spans collage\, drawing\, sculpture\, and photography\, presenting a powerful and non-stereotypical vision of resilience and creative autonomy. \nThe exhibition will be on display at Copperbridge Foundation from February 27 through May 23\, 2026. \nThe works are drawn from the NAEMI Collection\, made possible through the generous support of Juan Martin\, NAEMI’s Executive Director. The exhibition will be accompanied by a specially designed catalogue and a series of public programs\, including a panel discussion\, documentary screenings\, and community-engaged initiatives. \nThe art exhibit would not have been made possible without the help of organizations like Broward Behavioral Health Coalition (BBHC) Inc.\, which provides a comprehensive system of care for substance use\, mental health\, and co-occurring disorders for individuals in Broward County. \nOther events and activities taking place during the exhibition will include: \nPanel Discussion on Wednesday\, March 4 at 6 p. m. to 9 p.m.: Elvia Rosa Castro will participate in a panel discussion\, Channeling Wellness Through the Arts\, alongside Silvia Quintana\, LMHC\, CAP\, CEO of Broward Behavioral Health Coalition. The discussion will explore how art contributes to wellness across diverse lived experiences and supports healing and recovery. \nDrumming Circle on Friday\, May 22 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.: South Florida Wellness Network will conduct a drumming circle led by a performer in recovery. This is a participatory experience inviting the audience to express and interact through drumming. This event will mark the closing of the exhibition. \nNo Seasoning: Artworks by Seven Afro-Descendant Cuban Outsider Artists Exhibit:\nFebruary 27 – May 23\, 2026\nMonday – Friday\, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. \nPanel Discussion – ‘Channeling Wellness Through the Arts’\nWednesday\, March 4\, 2026\n6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. \nSouth Florida Wellness Network Drumming Circle\nFriday\, May 22\, 2026\n6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. \nDETAILS: The opening reception is free.
