Broward County Bar Association Names First Woman of Color As President-Elect

After forming in 1925, the Broward County Bar Association (BCBA) will soon have its first woman of color serving as president after Alison F. Smith, Esq. was recently named president-elect of the organization.

“I’m beyond excited and consider it to be a privilege and an honor to represent the BCBA,” Smith says. “As the first woman of color to be president in our organization’s history, I take this position with the utmost seriousness and am humbled to lead BCBA.”

Smith, an attorney at Weiss Serota Helfman Cole & Bierman, was sworn in as President-elect on July 2 and will officially take over the position next year. As a member of BCBA, Smith previously served as Chairperson of the Government Law Section, Co-Chairperson of the Bench and Bar Convention and Secretary and Treasurer on the Executive Committee. She also helped developed Ignite Your Passion, a BCBA program partnership with Broward College that focuses on introducing minority students to experienced professionals tot offer guidance, support and encouragement.

“Alison Smith is a smart, thoughtful and energetic leader who understands the business and service aspect of the balance that a Bar Association has to manage,” says Braulio Rosa, Executive Director of BCBA. “I have known Alison for almost a decade and always have enjoyed working with her to develop good services and products for the BCBA and those we serve.”

While president, Smith will govern an organization with nearly 4,000 members, 19 practice sections, 19 committees and three affiliate organizations, including the Association of South Florida Mediators and Arbitrators, the Collaborative Family Law Professionals of South Florida and the North Dade Bar Association.

“Broward County lawyers will be well served by the commitment and passion that Alison brings to BCBA leadership,” says Mitch Burnstein, Managing Director of Weiss Serota Helfman Cole & Bierman. “Those of us who work with her see that same level of commitment and passion with her clients.”

Before working as an attorney, Smith graduated magna cum laude from Nova Southeastern University’s Shepard Broad College of Law and received a B.S. in Psychology with a minor in Legal Studies from Nova Southeastern University.

BIOGRAPHY

Drew Limsky joined Lifestyle Media Group in August 2020 as Editor-in-Chief of South Florida Business & Wealth. His first issue of SFBW, October 2020, heralded a reimagined structure, with new content categories and a slew of fresh visual themes. “As sort of a cross between Forbes and Robb Report, with a dash of GQ and Vogue,” Limsky says, “SFBW reflects South Florida’s increasingly sophisticated and dynamic business and cultural landscape.”

Limsky, an avid traveler, swimmer and film buff who holds a law degree and Ph.D. from New York University, likes to say, “I’m a doctor, but I can’t operate—except on your brand.” He wrote his dissertation on the nonfiction work of Joan Didion. Prior to that, Limsky received his B.A. in English, summa cum laude, from Emory University and earned his M.A. in literature at American University in connection with a Masters Scholar Award fellowship.

Limsky came to SFBW at the apex of a storied career in journalism and publishing that includes six previous lead editorial roles, including for some of the world’s best-known brands. He served as global editor-in-chief of Lexus magazine, founding editor-in-chief of custom lifestyle magazines for Cadillac and Holland America Line, and was the founding editor-in-chief of Modern Luxury Interiors South Florida. He also was the executive editor for B2B magazines for Acura and Honda Financial Services, and he served as travel editor for Conde Nast. Magazines under Limsky’s editorship have garnered more than 75 industry awards.

He has also written for many of the country’s top newspapers and magazines, including The New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Miami Herald, Boston Globe, USA Today, Worth, Robb Report, Afar, Time Out New York, National Geographic Traveler, Men’s Journal, Ritz-Carlton, Elite Traveler, Florida Design, Metropolis and Architectural Digest Mexico. His other clients have included Four Seasons, Acqualina Resort & Residences, Yahoo!, American Airlines, Wynn, Douglas Elliman and Corcoran. As an adjunct assistant professor, Limsky has taught journalism, film and creative writing at the City University of New York, Pace University, American University and other colleges.
