Sawyer’s Walk, the biggest mixed-use development in the Overtown community, has launched its retail section. A brand new Target recently opened its doors, with several other major retailers expected to follow suit in the coming weeks and months. These include Burlington, Five Below, Aldi supermarket, and Ross Dress for Less, all aimed at serving the local Overtown community and nearby neighborhoods.
Sawyer’s Walk spans 1.5 million square feet and features 578 newly opened residential units, primarily for low-income seniors. It also includes 175,000 square feet of prime retail space, a 25,000-square-foot public plaza, and 130,000 square feet of office space, which MSC Group has acquired to serve as the new North American headquarters for MSC Cruises.
The retail openings are anchored by a 50,000-square-foot Target store, marking the major retailer’s first location in Downtown Miami, along with a 38,000-square-foot Burlington department store set to debut in October. Following these, a 25,000-square-foot Aldi discount supermarket and a 10,000-square-foot Five Below store, which offers most products for $5 or less, are scheduled to open in November. Finally, a 26,000-square-foot Ross Dress for Less will arrive in March 2025.
“We’re excited to announce the highly anticipated opening of our value-add retail concepts at Sawyer’s Walk led by the opening of Target, which will add tremendous value to area residents and the daily workforce in Greater Downtown Miami,” says Michael Swerdlow, Managing Partner of SG Holdings. “Since we conceived the project and broke ground on Sawyer’s Walk, we always envisioned having robust retail offerings to serve the broader community. With the phased opening of our retailers over the coming weeks and months, we are proud to continue to witness the incredible economic and civic impact the delivery of Sawyer’s Walk is having in the community at a critical time when Miami faces a housing and affordability crisis.”
SG Holdings, a collaboration between Swerdlow Group, SJM Partners, and Alben Duffie, developed a 3.4-acre mixed-use project at 249 NW 6th St., officially launched in June 2021. This successful public-private partnership was achieved through teamwork with the City of Miami’s Southeast Overtown/Park West Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), Miami-Dade County’s Department of Public Housing and Community Development (PHCD), and various local leaders, including County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, City of Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, City Commissioner and Chairwoman Christine King, along with Miami-Dade County Commissioner Keon Hardemon.
Sawyer’s Walk boasts a vibrant public plaza with art murals, an outdoor seating area, a children’s playground, and a dog park, all of which aim to enrich the local community. Additionally, the property offers nearly 1,000 parking spots for residents and visitors and easy access to multiple public transit options, including the Metrorail, Metromover, and Brightline.
