It’s a new year, which means it’s time for those all-too familiar resolutions. You know the drill: Eat healthier. Exercise more. Lose the unwanted pounds. Crush the miniskirt.

Fortunately, South Florida offers more than its share of no-frills, chain and boutique gyms—as well as some specialized concepts for those interested in a workout beyond free weights and treadmills.

Whether you want the graceful moves of a Cirque du Soleil performer or the stamina of a boxer, check out the following studios that are ready to work your calves, delts and everything in between.

Location: 6161 N. Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale

About: Cycleward, owned by Lisa Anderson (pictured), is Fort Lauderdale’s first and largest indoor cycling studio, offering a high-stimulus workout that includes pulsating music, videos, black-light illumination, and performance metrics projected on a 65-inch-by-80-inch screen. Pump & Grind is the studio’s latest offering, which combines a 45-minute ride to music videos followed by 15 minutes of floor work with kettle bells and resistance bands. Remember to book your bike: Classes are limited to eight clients. Other ways to prepare include drinking water before, during and after your workout, eating a snack 30 minutes before class, and coming early to adjust your bike for seat position and handle bar height.

Locations: 8221 Glades Road, Suite 13, Boca Raton

500 NE Spanish River Blvd., No. 1, Boca Raton

About: Intensityx3 will give you a knockout body well before the 12th round. Training with a group (members are treated like family), you’ll sweat through a combination of kickboxing with fat-blasting and muscle-defining workouts. Classes have three components: Fight—Kickboxing is the foundational program targeting the core through constant twisting and impact. Burning through it all, you’ll throw at least 590 calories out of the ring. Lift—Resistance training gives muscle its shape, increasing resting metabolism and improving hormonal balance. Flight—With the latest craze, high intensity interval training, you’ll improve your cardiovascular system and muscle endurance through intense bursts of activity followed by less-intense exercise or rest. Enjoy knowing you’ll continue to burn calories well into the next day.

Location: 2039 Harrison St., Hollywood

About: Ever wondered how Cirque du Soleil dancers perform their acrobatic feats? Now, you can learn about aerial dance and take aerial circuit classes with Ashley Neptune, a former Rockette who performed at New York’s Radio City Music Hall. Weekly group classes are held at the Hollywood-based Polestars studio, where Neptune gets attendees off the ground in no time. The aerial circuit classes provide an introduction to the cirque star’s tool kit, including the aerial hammock and silk; heart- and moon-shaped hoops called lyras; slings, poles, chains and nets. In aerial dance, you’ll learn to do drops, rolls and all the tricks you’ll need to master gravity-defying choreography.

About: You’ll have a “peace out” experience at this yoga and dance place, where the team promises to create a community-minded and feel-good space. Editor-in-Chief

BIOGRAPHY

Drew Limsky joined Lifestyle Media Group in August 2020 as Editor-in-Chief of South Florida Business & Wealth. His first issue of SFBW, October 2020, heralded a reimagined structure, with new content categories and a slew of fresh visual themes. “As sort of a cross between Forbes and Robb Report, with a dash of GQ and Vogue,” Limsky says, “SFBW reflects South Florida’s increasingly sophisticated and dynamic business and cultural landscape.”

Limsky, an avid traveler, swimmer and film buff who holds a law degree and Ph.D. from New York University, likes to say, “I’m a doctor, but I can’t operate—except on your brand.” He wrote his dissertation on the nonfiction work of Joan Didion. Prior to that, Limsky received his B.A. in English, summa cum laude, from Emory University and earned his M.A. in literature at American University in connection with a Masters Scholar Award fellowship.

Limsky came to SFBW at the apex of a storied career in journalism and publishing that includes six previous lead editorial roles, including for some of the world’s best-known brands. He served as global editor-in-chief of Lexus magazine, founding editor-in-chief of custom lifestyle magazines for Cadillac and Holland America Line, and was the founding editor-in-chief of Modern Luxury Interiors South Florida. He also was the executive editor for B2B magazines for Acura and Honda Financial Services, and he served as travel editor for Conde Nast. Magazines under Limsky’s editorship have garnered more than 75 industry awards.

He has also written for many of the country’s top newspapers and magazines, including The New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Miami Herald, Boston Globe, USA Today, Worth, Robb Report, Afar, Time Out New York, National Geographic Traveler, Men’s Journal, Ritz-Carlton, Elite Traveler, Florida Design, Metropolis and Architectural Digest Mexico. His other clients have included Four Seasons, Acqualina Resort & Residences, Yahoo!, American Airlines, Wynn, Douglas Elliman and Corcoran. As an adjunct assistant professor, Limsky has taught journalism, film and creative writing at the City University of New York, Pace University, American University and other colleges.
