Broward MPO Receives Grant to Reduce Traffic Fatalities

The Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) recently received a $5 million Safe Streets and Roads For All (SS4A) grant. The funds, derived from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, will help Broward County develop a safety plan to reduce traffic fatalities by targeting high-crash sites in cities and counties. It also supports the U.S. Department of Transportation’s comprehensive strategy to reduce roadway deaths, which claim more than 40,000 lives yearly.

These federal funds, provided by the U.S. Department of Transportation, will allow the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization and Broward County to develop county-wide implementation strategies to prevent roadway deaths and serious injuries with an emphasis on underserved communities. The action plan will yield three main deliverables: data management, policy recommendations, and a prioritized list of capital improvement projects so the county government can keep local roads and streets safe. Once the action plan is complete, the county will announce the exact projects to prevent roadway deaths and serious injuries.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg recently announced a historic $800 million in grant awards for 510 projects through the new Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Grant program, a record amount of funding to improve roads and address traffic fatalities. The competitive grant program, established by President Biden’s historic infrastructure law, provides $5 billion over five years for regional, local, and Tribal initiatives — from redesigned roads to better sidewalks and crosswalks — to prevent deaths and serious injuries on the nation’s roadways. The Department also launched a data visualization tool that shows crash hotspots that can help target needed resources.
