Stonewall National Museum and NSU Art Museum Launch Partnership to Strengthen Community Ties

The joint effort will help enhance awareness and engagement in the LGBTQIA+ community.

The NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale has recently partnered with the Stonewall National Museum, Archives & Library to support the LGBTQIA+ community in Fort Lauderdale to raise awareness and foster engagement for the community.

“NSU Art Museum is honored to work with Stonewall National Museum, Archives & Library as a community partner,” Bonnie Clearwater says, Director and Chief Curator at the NSU Art Museum. “Stonewall National Museum, Archives & Library is a safe and welcoming space to those looking to collect, preserve, exhibit and teach American LGBTQIA+ culture and history. We look forward to strengthening our partnership, sharing related programming, and creating a respectful, inclusive community in Fort Lauderdale at both institutions.”

The NSU Art Museum is known for its embrace of diversity and inclusion in terms of its audience and the artists it features. The museum has prioritized providing a platform for underrepresented groups, such as the LGBTQ+ and BIPOC communities, through its educational programming, curatorial department, and extensive permanent collection. Starting on June 1, the museum is pleased to offer a $2 discount off general admission to current Stonewall National Museum & Archives members who present valid membership cards at NSU Art Museum.

“The arts support and are foundational to every other thing that we believe to be important,” Robert Kesten says, Executive Director of Stonewall National Museum, Archives, and Library. “They allow us to dream and they allow us to envision what the world can be when we utilize science and math as tools to create a brighter and more exciting future. Without the arts, we lose the humanity that is essential to establishing a future where human beings actually fit in. Stonewall National Museum, Archives, & Library, along with NSU Museum of Art, are dedicated to just that, and so this partnership was made for these times.”

Located in the heart of Downtown Fort Lauderdale, the NSU Art Museum is a premier destination for exhibitions and programs that cover all aspects of civilization’s visual history. It has gained a reputation for its significant collection of Latin American art, contemporary art featuring works by Black, Latin American, and women artists, and pieces by American artist William Glackens and the European Cobra group of artists.

“It’s great to learn of this partnership between the NSU Art Museum and the Stonewall National Museum, Archives, & Library as both are such tremendous resources to the Greater Fort Lauderdale community,” Dean Trantalis says, Mayor of Fort Lauderdale. “Stonewall is the largest facility in the United States devoted to the display of LGBTQ history and culture, while the NSU Art Museum’s reputation in the art world has grown substantially as a premier destination to see major exhibitions. Working together, these two great organizations will be able to accomplish amazing things in engagement on the awareness of diversity and inclusion.”
