ChatGPT’s Shared Links Exposed

Your Private Conversations May Be Floating on Google

If you’ve ever used the “Share” feature in ChatGPT to share a conversation, it’s possible your chat might be floating around on Google—available to anyone with a search engine and the right keywords.

Many internet users have recently discovered that when ChatGPT conversations are shared via a unique URL, they can end up being indexed by search engines. This feature was initially designed to help users collaborate by sharing their chats, but it’s now raising privacy concerns. When you create a shared link, the conversation becomes public, accessible to anyone with the URL. If shared on social media or posted on a website, it can quickly be picked up by Google’s crawlers. If you opt for the “Make this chat discoverable” checkbox, the conversation is indexed by search engines automatically.

Although OpenAI advised users against sharing sensitive information, some users were caught off guard by the visibility their private chats gained. Searching for these shared links on Google reveals thousands of indexed conversations. Reddit users have been sharing examples of alarming instances where personal and sensitive information was exposed—some of it including full names, phone numbers, and even home addresses. In one instance, a user stumbled upon a conversation about building a resume that included an individual’s full personal details.

Others have found much more disturbing content, such as emotional disclosures, trauma stories, and even coded messages that appear to suggest illicit activity. “I found a conversation from a sex worker who accidentally shared their full name,” one Redditor shared. “I contacted them, but they went off on me. It made me question what’s ethical.”

Cybernews has reached out to OpenAI for a comment but has not received a response as of yet. However, the company’s Chief Information Security Officer, Dane Stuckey, shared on X that the feature will be removed from the ChatGPT app starting tomorrow. “This was a short-lived experiment,” Stuckey wrote. “We realize it created too many opportunities for people to share content they didn’t intend to, so we’re pulling it.” The company also aims to remove indexed content from search engines.

The shared link feature allowed users to create a read-only version of their conversation that was published on a public OpenAI-hosted page. This page could be indexed by search engines. If a user deleted the conversation from their ChatGPT account, the shared URL remained active unless explicitly deleted. Even if the link was removed, Google search results might continue to show the page until it is re-crawled.

To prevent your own conversations from being publicly accessible, users can head to the ChatGPT settings and clear any shared links or delete them entirely from the Data Controls section. OpenAI advises users to delete shared links if they no longer want the conversation to be visible.

While the feature’s removal is a positive step, experts note that it’s also possible to mitigate such issues through web crawler rules like “robots.txt.” However, these rules are often ignored by LLM operators. It seems OpenAI decided that removing the feature entirely is the best course of action to avoid further privacy breaches.ork matters, and most importantly, we all can make a positive impact. Whether through sport, business, or philanthropy, the lessons learned today are sure to resonate for years to come.
