Fort Lauderdale High School Students Selected as 2024 Conrad & Scherer Pathways to Careers in Law Fellows

Seniors from this year’s and last year’s classes will be eligible to apply for a paid summer internship at the law firm.

The 2024 Fellows for Conrad & Scherer‘s Pathways to Careers in Law have been chosen from Fort Lauderdale High School’s Pre-Law Magnet program. The collaboration between the Fort Lauderdale law firm, NSU’s Shephard Broad College of Law (NSU College of Law), and Fort Lauderdale High School provides a series of activities to provide the Fellows with a clear understanding of the path toward a career in law. As part of the program, the Fellows will visit NSU College of Law, where they will attend a mock law class taught by an NSU law professor, tour the campus, and attend a reception with local judges and NSU faculty members. Additionally, they will visit the Broward County and Federal Courthouses and spend time at the Conrad & Scherer offices. The selection process for the Fellows involved submitting applications that included teacher recommendations, a resume, and an essay on why they wish to pursue a career in law.

“This innovative partnership creates a unique pathway for students to explore legal careers and gain valuable insights from experienced professionals,” Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Peter B. Licata says. “We are committed to providing our students with the best possible opportunities in for their future careers, and this program is a shining example of our commitment to equity and excellence.”

“We are thrilled to be entering the third year of this powerful partnership between NSU, Conrad & Scherer, and Fort Lauderdale High,” José Roberto (Beto) Juárez Jr. says, Dean of NSU Shepard Broad College of Law. “This program has already demonstrated its value in supporting our community’s diverse student population by giving minority students a chance to learn about careers in law.”

Janine McGuire, who is a partner at Conrad & Scherer and manages the program, says that the Conrad & Scherer Pathways to Careers in Law program offers high school students an opportunity to gain exposure to the entire continuum, from high school through a career in law.

“Now that the Pathways program is in its third year, we are seeing measurable results,” she says. “Our first Conrad & Scherer Pathways scholarship recipient is studying for her bachelor’s degree in law at NSU, and two Fellows have spent the summers working at our firm. This program is making a real difference in the lives of students who dream of careers in law.”
