Fresh off helping the Florida Panthers win the franchise’s first-ever Stanley Cup, Aleksander “Sasha” Barkov’s work away from Amerant Bank Arena proves just as vital for local children at South Florida hospitals. Barkov launched his #BarkovScores4JoeD philanthropic campaign for Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation, donating $1,600 for each goal he scores and $800 for each he assists on during the regular season and playoffs. He also provides a suite at each Panthers home game for those connected to the hospital.
In the five seasons of #BarkovScores4JoeD, the team captain has pledged $420,000 to help kids, families and programs at the pediatric facility in Hollywood. His contribution has supported the recent expansion of the children’s hospital, including the new child life zone, where he connects with patients by playing games, taking photos and signing autographs to positively impact their lives.
“I really value my partnership with Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and am very happy they are part of the Florida Panthers family,” says Barkov, a two-time Frank J. Selke Trophy winner as the best defensive forward in the league. “I’m very proud to witness the expansion of the hospital and the ability this amazing team of professionals now have to provide even more complex care to the South Florida community and beyond.”
Along with the Stanley Cup and Selke trophies to his name, Barkov has also received the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, given to the NHL player who exemplifies sportsmanship, gentlemanly conduct and a high level of playing ability. Selected with the No. 2 pick in the 2013 draft, he has spent his entire NHL career with the Panthers.
The Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital is one of the country’s pediatric hospitals. It provides a wide range of healthcare services and programs within a nurturing and empathetic environment tailored specifically for children.
