As more professionals reconsider the cost and pace of major cities, smaller metros are emerging as attractive alternatives for career growth without sacrificing lifestyle. A new study from CoworkingCafe ranks the best U.S. cities with populations under 250,000 where job opportunities, income potential, and quality of life intersect—and Boca Raton made the list.
The report evaluated 298 cities using 19 metrics across salary growth, job market strength, industry presence, and amenities. Researchers placed less emphasis on affordability alone, instead focusing on markets where professionals can build long-term careers.
Boca Raton ranked No. 14 overall, reflecting continued migration of finance, technology, and professional services firms to South Florida, along with strong income levels and proximity to the larger economic hubs of Miami and Fort Lauderdale. The study noted that many of the top-ranked cities benefit from being near major metros while offering shorter commutes, lower stress, and access to high-paying industries.
Alpharetta, Georgia, ranked No. 1, followed by South Jordan, Utah, where wages have risen sharply in recent years. Several California tech hubs, including Mountain View, Santa Clara, and Palo Alto, also placed high due to strong salaries despite higher living costs.
Researchers found that the shift toward smaller cities is being driven largely by educated professionals in their late twenties and thirties who want both earning power and quality of life. Rather than leaving opportunity behind, many are choosing markets where career growth and lifestyle advantages can coexist.
