Memorial Healthcare System Broadens Robotic Surgery Program in Broward

A new device is being implemented at five South Florida hospitals.

Memorial Healthcare System has revealed a significant expansion of its robotic surgery program. Seven cutting-edge Intuitive® da Vinci Xi® surgical systems will be purchased and utilized in five of its hospitals across south Broward. This move represents a significant investment in Memorial’s dedication to improving patient care, enhancing surgical outcomes, and progressing medical education.

By incorporating the state-of-the-art da Vinci Xi® systems, Memorial is expanding the availability of minimally invasive surgical procedures for patients throughout the region. This approach presents numerous advantages, such as shorter hospital stays, decreased pain and discomfort, and smaller incisions, reducing scarring and faster recovery times. As a result of the newly available robotic surgery equipment, Memorial has already seen a 22% increase in robotic surgeries.

Memorial is expanding its robotic surgery program from eight to 15 surgical systems to improve patient access to advanced treatment options. The highly skilled pediatric and adult surgeons within the healthcare system will gain the ability to perform complex procedures with increased precision and dexterity. This expansion means greater treatment possibilities for various medical conditions, such as lung, esophagus, and complex urologic surgeries, gallbladder removal, kidney transplantation, bariatric surgeries, hernia repairs and more.

“As we nearly double our robotic surgery program throughout the Memorial Healthcare System, we’re not just adding robots; we’re multiplying possibilities for our patients, surgeons and surgical residents,” says Dr. Holly L. Neville, Associate Chief Medical Officer and Program Director of General Surgery Residency at Memorial Healthcare System. “With each advancement, we’re sculpting a future where precision meets compassion, ensuring patients have access to the leading care modern medicine can offer.”

Robotic surgery is an advancing field, and practical experience with these advanced technologies is essential for future surgeons. With guidance and educational initiatives led by experienced robotic surgeons, surgical and gynecological residents will have the chance to cultivate the skills and knowledge required to succeed in this specialized healthcare area. Memorial has invested in training consoles to enable surgeons and residents to refine their expertise in a simulated environment, guaranteeing patients receive top-tier care.

The seven new surgical systems are used at Memorial Regional Hospital, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Memorial Hospital West, Memorial Hospital Miramar and Memorial Hospital Pembroke.
