5 Proven Strategies to Help Attorneys Grow Their Law Firm

Expert tips from a Networking and Business Coach to build lasting relationships and boost referrals.

Growing a law firm takes more than winning cases; it’s about building relationships and creating a trusted brand. Here are five proven tips:

  1. Build Relationships with Other Attorneys: Partnering with attorneys in complementary areas of law is a powerful way to grow your firm. By fostering these relationships, you can refer clients to each other, creating a mutually beneficial referral pipeline. For example, a family law attorney can refer clients to an estate planning lawyer when the need arises.
  • Personalized Client Communication: After the case is closed, don’t let communication end. Sending personalized follow-up messages to past clients not only maintains the relationship but keeps you top of mind for future referrals. Make sure this communication feels genuine and specific to each client, avoiding bulk emails that come across as impersonal.
  • Educational Marketing: Create content that educates potential clients, contacts, and even other attorneys about your area of expertise. When your network understands what to look out for, they’re more likely to refer cases to you. Whether through newsletters, blogs, or short videos, keep your audience informed about the legal issues you specialize in.
  • Use Testimonials & Make Yourself Easy to Find: Positive client testimonials are crucial for building trust. Make sure they’re visible on your website, social media, and online directories. Also, ensure your contact information is easy to find so prospective clients don’t have to dig to reach you.
  • Join a Networking Group: Find a reputable networking group, like BNI or a local chamber of commerce, to meet potential referral partners. Building connections in these groups can lead to long-term relationships and new business opportunities.

By focusing on relationships and visibility, attorneys can create a steady stream of referrals and grow their law firm with purpose.

BIOGRAPHY

Drew Limsky joined Lifestyle Media Group in August 2020 as Editor-in-Chief of South Florida Business & Wealth. His first issue of SFBW, October 2020, heralded a reimagined structure, with new content categories and a slew of fresh visual themes. “As sort of a cross between Forbes and Robb Report, with a dash of GQ and Vogue,” Limsky says, “SFBW reflects South Florida’s increasingly sophisticated and dynamic business and cultural landscape.”

Limsky, an avid traveler, swimmer and film buff who holds a law degree and Ph.D. from New York University, likes to say, “I’m a doctor, but I can’t operate—except on your brand.” He wrote his dissertation on the nonfiction work of Joan Didion. Prior to that, Limsky received his B.A. in English, summa cum laude, from Emory University and earned his M.A. in literature at American University in connection with a Masters Scholar Award fellowship.

Limsky came to SFBW at the apex of a storied career in journalism and publishing that includes six previous lead editorial roles, including for some of the world’s best-known brands. He served as global editor-in-chief of Lexus magazine, founding editor-in-chief of custom lifestyle magazines for Cadillac and Holland America Line, and was the founding editor-in-chief of Modern Luxury Interiors South Florida. He also was the executive editor for B2B magazines for Acura and Honda Financial Services, and he served as travel editor for Conde Nast. Magazines under Limsky’s editorship have garnered more than 75 industry awards.

He has also written for many of the country’s top newspapers and magazines, including The New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Miami Herald, Boston Globe, USA Today, Worth, Robb Report, Afar, Time Out New York, National Geographic Traveler, Men’s Journal, Ritz-Carlton, Elite Traveler, Florida Design, Metropolis and Architectural Digest Mexico. His other clients have included Four Seasons, Acqualina Resort & Residences, Yahoo!, American Airlines, Wynn, Douglas Elliman and Corcoran.
