The Breakers Palm Beach: Addressing the Workforce Housing Challenge

The Breakers Palm Beach is exploring development of a dedicated housing campus for its employees on a vacant 1.16-acre lot in West Palm Beach, just a few miles west of the resort.

To tackle the challenge of affordable workforce housing, The Breakers Palm Beach is exploring the development of a dedicated housing campus for its employees on a vacant 1.16-acre lot at 2410 N. Australian Avenue in West Palm Beach, just a few miles west of the resort.

The city has already taken the first step by declaring the land surplus, clearing the way for negotiations with the developer, VDG Land Co. On Tuesday, February 18, the West Palm Beach City Commission approved a resolution determining that the City-owned property is not needed for municipal purposes and authorizing negotiations for its sale to VDG Land Co., LLC. Tasked with developing the housing complex, VDG Land Co. would bring to life the county’s first employer-backed housing initiative of its kind.

Palm Beach County is also working to address the broader issue, committing $200 million to affordable housing initiatives and offering developers low-interest financing. If the project moves forward, it could set a precedent for other major employers in the region. While the site presents development challenges project backers remain optimistic.

If successful, The Breakers’ Employee Housing Campus could ease housing pressures, freeing up existing affordable units for the broader community while providing workers with stable, convenient living arrangements.
