Flamingo Supermarket Opens in Cooper City After Years of Determined Effort

Nearly four years after signing a lease to occupy a long-vacant former Winn-Dixie store, brothers Nick and Albert Gonzalez have brought their vision to life with the opening of Flamingo Supermarket at the Embassy Lakes Shopping Center in Cooper City.

Following a quiet “soft opening” over Memorial Day weekend, the brothers hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the official debut of their full-service supermarket—a moment that was hard-earned after years of challenges.

“It was a lot of obstacles,” said Nick Gonzalez, reflecting on the journey. Renovations to the building proved more complicated than expected, including extended delays in replacing the air conditioning system and waterproofing the roof. On top of construction setbacks, Nick faced a personal health crisis: a herniated disk that required emergency surgery and a six-month recovery period.

Despite the hurdles, the Gonzalez brothers remained committed to their dream. Now, with Flamingo Supermarket finally open, they are proud to welcome the community into a space they’ve worked tirelessly to create.
