More than 70 children in foster care received new clothes, backpacks and school supplies during Voices for Children of Broward County’s annual Back-to-School Extravaganza at Old Navy in Hollywood’s Oakwood Plaza.
Held Aug. 2, the event was part of the nonprofit’s 15th anniversary celebration and its Dream Big Days program, which creates enriching experiences for children in foster care.
Children shopped for back-to-school essentials alongside volunteers and representatives from the Hollywood Police Department, Hollywood Fire Rescue & Beach Safety and Broward Sheriff’s Office. Spider-Man, Mirabel from Disney’s Encanto and other costumed characters joined the festivities, while Florida Panthers mascot Stanley C. Panther made a surprise appearance.
The morning also included breakfast, face painting, activities and music from DJ Aaron.
“The start of a new school year should feel exciting, not overwhelming,” Voices President and CEO Erica Herman said, adding that providing supplies sends children an important message “that they matter, that they are seen, and that someone is in their corner rooting for their success.”
Voices collects school supplies and monetary donations throughout the year to assist Broward County children and young adults who have experienced abuse, neglect or abandonment. Community members can support the organization through donations, sponsorships and supply drives.
