Editor’s Blog: Notes from the Chief

The pandemic has been brutal for the performing arts, for audiences and for all the creative talent forced to sit on their hands until it’s once again safe to take in a show. In order to maintain its pulse, the Broward Center has launched a series of livestream events with top Broadway talent, some of the programs achieved through an assist from Bank of America. Last week saw knockout livestream performances from the young stars of such shows as The Band’s Visit and Hamilton, which are both on the Broward Center’s spring schedule—live (fingers crossed).

Oct. 24 brings a true diva event: Patti LuPone, Live from the West Side. I first saw Lupone on Broadway in her iconic title performance in Evita. Then in Anything Goes at Lincoln Center. Then as Mama Rose in Gypsy, followed by her supporting star turn in Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. (Yes, at this point, stalker alert.) The last time I saw her live was in 2017 in War Paint. So you think I’m going to miss this?

There’s nothing frivolous about an industry that directly and indirectly supports thousands of Broward County jobs. Everyone has a stake in maintaining the viability of our local cultural institutions, so take a break from the news and do your part. For your mental health. Tickets available here.
