Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-FL) presented Broward Partnership for the Homeless with an $850,000 Legislative Award to address homelessness and the affordable housing crisis in Broward County. The presentation, attended by local community leaders and Broward Partnership representatives, occurred at Broward Partnership in Fort Lauderdale.
The $850,000 funding will support the construction of Aspire 1650, a crucial housing project to help vulnerable communities in the community. Aspire 1650 will comprise approximately 80 apartment units and offer accessible common spaces, amenities, resources, and services. The development will be next to the existing North Homeless Assistance Center in Pompano Beach, serving as an income-eligible housing community.
“We are immensely grateful to Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick for her unwavering support and dedication to our mission,” Tom Campbell says, CEO of Broward Partnership. “Today’s check presentation is crucial for Aspire 1650, our second affordable housing development. This project exemplifies our vision of safe and stable housing for all and highlights the importance of public-private partnerships.”
Aspire 1650 plans to allocate some apartments for permanent supportive housing for individuals and families experiencing homelessness, including units for individuals with special needs. The rest of the apartments will be set aside for affordable housing for income-qualifying individuals and families who do not need supportive services. The funding for this initiative was obtained through the U.S. House of Representatives appropriations process.
“The housing crisis in Broward County has made it one of the least affordable places to live in the country. It pains me deeply to know that over 2,000 Broward County residents are experiencing homelessness. No one in our nation should be without a roof over their head,” Cherfilus-McCormick says. “With this funding, we are taking a significant step towards addressing homelessness and the affordable housing crisis in Broward County. I am proud to have secured this investment, which will provide a stable environment where our community’s most vulnerable can rebuild their lives, access essential services, and join a supportive community. This funding reflects my unwavering commitment to protecting, building, and delivering for Florida’s 20th Congressional District.”
The event included speeches from Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick, Broward Partnership CEO Tom Campbell, Mitch Rosenstein from Green Mills Group, and Broward Partnership Board Member Dodie Keith-Lazowick. They highlighted the significance of the funding and its expected effect on the community.
Aspire 1650 continues the legacy of Broward Partnership’s initial affordable housing project, Seven on Seventh, which was unveiled in September 2023. Seven on Seventh offers 72 homes and vital amenities in downtown Fort Lauderdale for individuals and families transitioning out of homelessness.
