Magic Johnson Named Honorary Chair of Billy Thompson All-Star Gala at PGA National

Thompson played with Magic on the Los Angeles Lakers.

The inaurgural Billy Thompson All-Star Gala will be hosted by the Billy Thompson Foundation at the PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens on Nov. 10, 2023. The event will feature celebrity appearances, an awards presentation for industry leaders, dinner, entertainment, dancing, and live and silent auctions. Additionally, former championship teammate Magic Johnson has been selected as Honorary Chair of the event.

The primary aim of the All-Star Gala is to gather significant funds for the three crucial initiatives by the Billy Thompson Foundation. These initiatives include Youth Mental Health Support, Champions Read Literacy Initiative and the proposed Billy Thompson Foundation Champion Center. The foundation believes that these initiatives will provide a platform for children and teenagers to thrive, become responsible leaders, and achieve their goals.

“There couldn’t be a more important time to invest in today’s youth,” Thompson says. “The impact of Covid on mental health and learning are well-documented locally and nationally and it will take programs like ours to help give them the boost they need to get back on track.”

Billy Thompson

With six championship titles and being one of four players in the Guinness Book of World Records to win college and NBA championships back-to-back, Thompson has a deep understanding of what it takes to win. He owes much of his success not only to his talent but also to the guidance of his coaches and mentors. In order to pass on the lessons he learned, the Billy Thompson Foundation was established. This South Florida-based nonprofit was founded by Billy and his wife, Cynthia, with a mission to provide opportunities for young people to succeed and grow into responsible leaders for the future. The foundation aims to instill the same championship spirit in today’s youth that has helped Billy achieve his own success.

Many of today’s youth face seemingly insurmountable mental health challenges. Unfortunately, too many of them struggle and are unable to receive the necessary support they need. Mental health disorders are the leading cause of disability and poor life outcomes in youth. In recent years, certain mental health disorders, such as depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation, have seen significant increases among young people. To address this issue, the Billy Thompson Foundation aims to empower young people and parents with practical knowledge, awareness programs, support and resources.

“We seek to foster transformational change in mind, body and spirit,” Cynthia Thompson says. “By empowering young people to believe in themselves and to have faith, our programming also uplifts families, which in turn will build stronger and healthier communities. All of this is achieved through shared knowledge, mutual respect and the collective efforts of an all-star team committed to a brighter future for our youth.”

BIOGRAPHY

Drew Limsky joined Lifestyle Media Group in August 2020 as Editor-in-Chief of South Florida Business & Wealth. His first issue of SFBW, October 2020, heralded a reimagined structure, with new content categories and a slew of fresh visual themes. “As sort of a cross between Forbes and Robb Report, with a dash of GQ and Vogue,” Limsky says, “SFBW reflects South Florida’s increasingly sophisticated and dynamic business and cultural landscape.”

Limsky, an avid traveler, swimmer and film buff who holds a law degree and Ph.D. from New York University, likes to say, “I’m a doctor, but I can’t operate—except on your brand.” He wrote his dissertation on the nonfiction work of Joan Didion. Prior to that, Limsky received his B.A. in English, summa cum laude, from Emory University and earned his M.A. in literature at American University in connection with a Masters Scholar Award fellowship.

Limsky came to SFBW at the apex of a storied career in journalism and publishing that includes six previous lead editorial roles, including for some of the world’s best-known brands. He served as global editor-in-chief of Lexus magazine, founding editor-in-chief of custom lifestyle magazines for Cadillac and Holland America Line, and was the founding editor-in-chief of Modern Luxury Interiors South Florida. He also was the executive editor for B2B magazines for Acura and Honda Financial Services, and he served as travel editor for Conde Nast. Magazines under Limsky’s editorship have garnered more than 75 industry awards.

He has also written for many of the country’s top newspapers and magazines, including The New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Miami Herald, Boston Globe, USA Today, Worth, Robb Report, Afar, Time Out New York, National Geographic Traveler, Men’s Journal, Ritz-Carlton, Elite Traveler, Florida Design, Metropolis and Architectural Digest Mexico. His other clients have included Four Seasons, Acqualina Resort & Residences, Yahoo!, American Airlines, Wynn, Douglas Elliman and Corcoran.
