One Hour a Week Can Change a Life

Join John Offerdahl’s Mission to Feed Broward’s Seniors.

When former Miami Dolphins linebacker John Offerdahl hung up his jersey, he didn’t stop being part of a team. Today, he and his wife, Lynn, are leading one of the most meaningful efforts in South Florida — feeding and visiting some of Broward County’s most vulnerable seniors through their Hand-Off Meals for Seniors program.

Each week, more than 5,000 freshly prepared, restaurant-quality meals are delivered to over 500 homebound seniors. But the Offerdahls can’t do it alone. They’re now launching a volunteer campaign to recruit at least 125 new drivers by the end of 2025, and they’re asking the community to step up.

“Too many seniors in Broward County go to bed hungry, wake up hungry, and spend their days hungry,” says John Offerdahl. “This is unacceptable. That’s why my wife, Lynn, and I have launched the Hand-Off food delivery campaign.”

Just One Hour a Week Can Make a Difference
Becoming a volunteer driver is simple and incredibly rewarding. Each driver is asked to donate just one hour a week to deliver meals and a friendly smile. Volunteers are paired with the same seniors weekly, allowing real relationships to grow.

“These visits feed the body and the soul,” says Lynn Offerdahl, who personally delivers meals to two seniors every Tuesday. “For many, it’s the highlight of their week and sometimes the only visitor they see.”

Meals That Nourish, Visits That Matter
The meals, prepared by Offerdahl’s Off-The-Grill and partnering restaurants, meet dietitian-approved nutritional standards and offer a fresh, flavorful alternative to traditional frozen or processed senior meals. The program partners with the Area Agency on Aging of Broward County and receives support from organizations including the Community Foundation of Broward, Miami Dolphins Foundation, Publix Super Markets Charities, Walgreens Foundation, and The Jim Moran Foundation.
