Before opening the first store in Wynwood, former firefighter Derek Kaplan had already envisioned Fireman Derek’s Bake Shop. Kaplan, who learned baking on his own, initially started by hand-squeezing limes at 15 to make his renowned Key Lime Pie. The venture began as a food truck and later led to the establishment of the original Wynwood shop in 2014. Over the last decade, Fireman Derek’s has evolved into a dessert empire. Kaplan and his skilled team of bakers have crafted over 50 unique pies, cakes, cheesecakes, cookies, brownies, and ice cream, available at their successful storefronts in Wynwood, Coconut Grove, and Fort Lauderdale, with plans for new locations on the horizon.
A decade after opening its first brick-and-mortar store in Wynwood, Fireman Derek’s Bake Shop commemorates the milestone with a striking new mural by artist Carlos Solano. The mural serves as a token of appreciation for the loyal supporters who have contributed to the brand’s success over the years.
“We are so excited to be celebrating 10 years of business here in Wynwood,” Kaplan says. “It’s a tremendous milestone that we will continue to build upon every day. Thank you to all of our customers for believing in our brand and desserts over the years.”
The bakery is showing its support for the Wynwood arts community by providing prints of the new mural signed by both the artist and Fireman Derek. These exclusive signed mural prints can be purchased for $30 and are exclusively available at the Wynwood location. A portion of the proceeds from the sales will be donated to a local arts organization.
