Made for the Shade

Miami’s Brickell area for decades has been home to some of South Florida’s most progressive high-rises. The upcoming Solitair project is poised to expand the list. The building’s architecture will have a unique angular basket-weave design. The zigzag structure with serrated balconies represents flight, movement, lightness and two-dimensional shifting planes.

The concept for Orlando-based real estate developer ZOM’s Solitair Residences comes from the award-winning architecture and design firm ADD Inc. The 48-story building has a high-profile location at the entrance to Brickell City Centre at 86 SW 8th St. Construction is expected to start this year and finish next summer.

Architect Jonathan Cardello, principal-director of ADD, is spearheading the architecture and design of the residential tower, which will also include 4,500 square feet of ground-level retail space. Solitair will have 434 residential units, three offices and 440 parking spaces.

Created with environmental concerns in mind, Solitair’s design avoids direct sunlight and solar radiation. Wells located throughout the structure will capture stormwater, while interior materials such as paint, carpets, adhesives and sealants will be low-emitting to maintain optimum indoor air. Green features such as low VOC paints and recycled glass, wood and quartz are also used throughout the interior. Once completed, the project will pursue LEED certification.

We wanted to create a building that would really stand out in Brickell,” Cardello says. “I believe we’ve done that with the ingenuity of this design. There is nothing like it in the area.”

The overall vision for the interior design is meant to seamlessly draw from Solitair’s architectural concept. Designed with cool urban, cool neutral materials, it is meant to serve as a gallery and backdrop for bold, artistic elements and to reflect the concept of sophisticated, modern living.

ADD Inc., which has offices in Boston and Miami, recently joined Stantec’s Buildings Team, a group of more than 2,500 design and allied professionals working in over 90 offices across North America.
