GREAT PLACES AND SPACES

Merin Hunter Codman’s new look

After being in the same space for 30 years, NAI Merin Hunter Codman’s leaders wanted to create a fresh work environment to invigorate and inspire its employees.  As a commercial real estate firm, it also wanted to reflect how people want to work today with collaborative spaces and natural lighting.  Chairman Neil Merin was the primary designer working with Julie Carr and Rosana Moreira of The CIGroup of Boca Raton.  Modern elements and bright colors are combined with rustic pieces like a distressed wood barn door to create an eclectic, professional and fun environment. A café area is a central focal point.

Remembering Mizner

Architect Addison Mizner helped define the look of Palm Beach and Boca Raton with his Mediterranean style of architecture. A new coffee table book, “Addison Mizner: The Architect Whose Genius Defined Palm Beach,” combines photographs of Mizner’s work with his colorful life story.  While Mizner is remembered largely as an architect, the book details how he was an entrepreneur as well, whether getting society friends behind the syndicate to develop Boca Raton or creating a furniture factory. The book by architect Stephen Perkins and historian James Caughman provides an entertaining history of early Palm Beach. Photographer Craig Kuhner contributes photos of Mizner’s work, which endures decades after his 1933 death.

Bahia Mar Makeover

After years of false starts, the Fort Lauderdale City Commission at the end of 2017 finally approved the redevelopment of Bahia Mar Resort and Yachting Center, home to the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. The concept by architect Kobi Karp for Tate Development includes seven high-rise apartment buildings with 651 units total, a 256-room hotel, a five-story office building with a supermarket, a 1,900-space underground garage, a two-story restaurant and a marina village with one and two story buildings. A promenade will provide public access to the waterfront. Much of the landside portion of the boat show will move into the garage space.
