SMART Program Highlights Collaboration Between Broward Public School District and Local Businesses

Broward voters approved The funding through a bond referendum in November 2014.

After Broward County voters approved a bond referendum that would provide funds for students and school, Broward County Public Schools has pledged to use the funding for safety, music, art, athletics, renovations and technology (SMART) at each school. The SMART Program is a $1.4 Billion Investment managed by AECOM as the Program Manager (PMOR). AECOM hires businesses to carry out the renovations or construction and those businesses must bid for approval on projects. Occasionally, the winning companies will hire subcontractors to assist with the upgrades.

The SMART Program has recently announced its new theme, “Bringing Business to Broward,” which aims to showcase the strong partnership between the district and local businesses. The program specifically highlights the crucial role these businesses play in renovating schools. It is viewed as a unique opportunity to give a voice to the businesses and spotlight some of the companies working behind the scenes. Notably, there has been a concerted effort to hire more ESMWBE-certified contractors.
