As NAMI Broward County commemorates 40 years of mental health advocacy in Broward County, it’s preparing for an even more impactful future by hiring Joe Oravecz as its new Chief Executive Officer. The organization offers free educational programs, support groups, training, and local and statewide advocacy to promote mental health for all. Its significant contributions to mental health awareness and support have been evident throughout its history, as it has implemented many vital programs and initiatives. In 2023, the organization’s signature programs, such as NAMI Connection Recovery Support Group, NAMI Family Support Groups, NAMI Ending the Silence, and its Mentor-to-Mentee program, helped it reach over 6,000 people.
Dr. Oravecz is an experienced leader with a visionary leadership style that closely aligns with the mission of NAMI Broward County. Having previously served in leadership positions in higher education, he has a proven track record of implementing transformative initiatives.
“I am truly honored and excited to join NAMI Broward County as its new CEO,” Dr. Oravecz says. “Mental health is a critical aspect of our overall well-being, and I am committed to working with the dedicated team at NAMI Broward County to advance our mission and make a positive impact on the lives of individuals and families in our community.”
Before becoming NAMI Broward County’s CEO, Dr. Oravecz worked as the Vice President for Student Life and Vice President of Student Affairs & Enrollment Management at Bridgewater State University (MA). In these roles, he oversaw the strategic vision of 18 departments and ensured efficient and unified operations across all university programming. During his tenure, he introduced innovative recruitment/enrollment operations based on a crisis-informed approach, created a culture of equity, and collaborated with various internal initiatives, including the University Mental Health Task Force. Dr. Oravecz has a B.A. in Psychology from Gettysburg College, an M.A. in Higher Education & Student Affairs from The Ohio State University, and a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from Florida State University.
