Apogee Awards Honorees: Barry Siegel

Barry is a native South Floridian now living in Boca Raton, FL. His son David is a junior in college and his daughter Amanda is a high school junior. Barry established the Siegel Law Group in 2002 to help people achieve Peace of Mind through planning. He and his amazing team take great pride in helping the firm’s clients by providing protection for them and their loved ones.

Fun fact: In my teens and early twenties, I appeared as an extra in several movies, television shows and commercials including Miami Vice, a Richard Dreyfus movie and a Burt Reynolds television show.

What is your favorite South Florida dining destination? There are so many wonderful places to enjoy a delicious meal in South Florida that it is almost impossible to choose just one. The answer would really be based on my mood at the moment.

What do you like to do on weekends? When it comes to weekend activities, I enjoy throwing a football around with my son, watching my daughter play volleyball, having brunch with friends somewhere with an ocean view or watching a Miami Dolphins football game.

How do you unwind from a long day at work? Ideally, I would workout after work more often. I feel that a good workout clears my mind and just makes me feel better. A nice dinner with family and / or friends is always a nice way to unwind as well.

What is your favorite quote? “Don’t give up, don’t ever give up!” — Jim Valvano

From whom, or what, do you draw inspiration? We are very fortunate to live in a tropical paradise. I draw much of my inspiration from the nature that surrounds us. South Florida offers so many wonderful outdoor sanctuaries whether it be one of our beautiful beaches or the marvelous gardens at the Morikami Museum. Such beautiful scenery inspires tranquility, creativity and peace.

What has been the biggest accomplishment of your career? Building a successful law firm with the help of my team is the biggest accomplishment of my career. We are proud to have achieved being on the Law Firm 500 for three consecutive years meaning we have been amongst the 500 fastest growing law firms in the nation.

What has been the most challenging moment in your career and how did you overcome it? The most challenging moment of my career happened this year. As with many other business owner, the COVID-19 pandemic has dealt us all with significant challenges. Many businesses have had to close down or layoff employees. At the Siegel Law Group, we had to continue our practice remotely and build completely new systems and procedures to run the firm virtually. We overcame this challenge and turned adversity into an opportunity. Our team responded with great unity and poise. During these unprecedented times, not only did we not close and not have to layoff any team members, instead, we added five new members to our team as we continue to grow to serve the planning needs of our community.

What advice would you give an up and coming professional? I would advise an up and coming professional that two things are crucial in achieving success in life. The first important piece of advice is to pay attention to their mindset. Mindset is crucial as professional development follows personal development. The other important piece of advice is to set goals. Set 5-year goals, 3-year goals, 1-year goals, quarterly goals and monthly goals. Review your goals regularly and re-adjust them accordingly.

BIOGRAPHY

Drew Limsky joined Lifestyle Media Group in August 2020 as Editor-in-Chief of South Florida Business & Wealth. His first issue of SFBW, October 2020, heralded a reimagined structure, with new content categories and a slew of fresh visual themes. “As sort of a cross between Forbes and Robb Report, with a dash of GQ and Vogue,” Limsky says, “SFBW reflects South Florida’s increasingly sophisticated and dynamic business and cultural landscape.”

Limsky, an avid traveler, swimmer and film buff who holds a law degree and Ph.D. from New York University, likes to say, “I’m a doctor, but I can’t operate—except on your brand.” He wrote his dissertation on the nonfiction work of Joan Didion. Prior to that, Limsky received his B.A. in English, summa cum laude, from Emory University and earned his M.A. in literature at American University in connection with a Masters Scholar Award fellowship.

Limsky came to SFBW at the apex of a storied career in journalism and publishing that includes six previous lead editorial roles, including for some of the world’s best-known brands. He served as global editor-in-chief of Lexus magazine, founding editor-in-chief of custom lifestyle magazines for Cadillac and Holland America Line, and was the founding editor-in-chief of Modern Luxury Interiors South Florida. He also was the executive editor for B2B magazines for Acura and Honda Financial Services, and he served as travel editor for Conde Nast. Magazines under Limsky’s editorship have garnered more than 75 industry awards.

He has also written for many of the country’s top newspapers and magazines, including The New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Miami Herald, Boston Globe, USA Today, Worth, Robb Report, Afar, Time Out New York, National Geographic Traveler, Men’s Journal, Ritz-Carlton, Elite Traveler, Florida Design, Metropolis and Architectural Digest Mexico.
