David Posnack Jewish Community Center and Sam Berman Charitable Foundation Partner to Launch Overlap Program

The two-year initiative aims to combat hate and discover common ground through culture and community.

The David Posnack Jewish Community Center, in partnership with the Sam Berman Charitable Foundation, has formed The Overlap Program. This two-year initiative aims to unite diverse communities by celebrating cultural diversity, featuring comedy, music, art exhibitions and workshops, literary events and film screenings. The program seeks to facilitate personal interactions and positive experiences, highlighting that differences are far less significant than the shared values that connect the community. The Overlap Program seeks to create a space where participants can learn from each other, develop empathy and understanding, and stand together against hatred and violence. Upcoming events include:

  • Combating Hate on Social Media – Oct. 30, 2024 at 6 p.m., West End Ave Deli @ NSU Alvin Sherman Library: A panel discussion that will address the challenges of hate speech, misinformation, and online bullying in the age of social media.
  • Franklin Foer in Commemoration of Kristallnacht – Nov. 12, 2024 at 6:30 p.m., Orlove Auditorium at DPJCC: World-renowned journalist Franklin Foer will engage in a thought-provoking conversation about rising antisemitism contextualized by the event of Kristallnacht.
  • Comedy for Peace – Dec. 9, 2024 at 7 p.m., Dania Beach Improv: Comedy for Peace is an apolitical comedy show designed to unite people of all backgrounds through laughter with the participation of a Muslim, Jewish and Christian comedian.
  • Uncomfortable Conversations with a Jew with Noa Tishby and Emmanuel Acho – Feb. 27, 2025, Orlove Auditorium at DPJCC: Israeli actress Noa Tishby and former NFL Linebacker Emmanuel Acho team up for Uncomfortable Conversations with a Jew, addressing complex topics to find common ground.

The Overlap Program is supported by the Marta-Beth Friedman Endowment, the American Jewish Committee (AJC) in Broward and Miami, and the Jewish Federation of Broward County.

The David Posnack Jewish Community Center is centrally situated in southwest Broward County. Its mission is to enhance lives by bringing people together through various cultural, educational, social, recreational, and wellness programs, all within an atmosphere of fun, friendship, and unity. Open to everyone and proudly guided by Jewish values, the “J” serves as a community hub year-round, providing numerous opportunities for individuals and families to thrive. It welcomes all residents, regardless of faith, age, or ability.
