Memorial Hospital Pembroke offers fully integrated 3D operating rooms equipped with digital and 3D imaging technology, providing surgeons with advanced surgical capabilities and optimal operating room management. The hospital’s 3D integrated operating rooms are controlled through a centralized touch screen, allowing for communication and documentation (patient information, data, equipment, resources and communication) to be coordinated with the complete range of medical equipment and peripheral systems in the operating room. This provides complete ergonomic control of the 3D operating room because all imaging and lighting equipment, video and data can be managed from both the sterile and non-sterile areas.
Intraoperative MRI and Intraoperative CT
The Marcus Neuroscience Institute, which opened in fall 2014 at Boca Raton Regional Hospital, utilizes some of the most sophisticated neurological technology available. Found in only a handful of facilities nationwide, intraoperative MRI/CT enable doctors to view high-quality, real-time scans of a patient’s brain and spine during a procedure. This allows doctors to monitor progress throughout and adjust accordingly, resulting in safer and more precise surgeries and reducing the need for additional postoperative imaging procedures. The iMRI/iCT scanners move along a ceiling-mounted track within the operating room suite, eliminating the need to transfer a patient to and from the diagnostic room and operating room.
3D Mammography at Boca Raton Regional
Boca Raton Regional Hospital is one of the first in Florida to offer the trademarked SenoClaire by GE Healthcare, the only USFDA-approved 3D breast tomosynthesis delivering the same low dose as 2D screenings. SenoClaire uses a “step-and-shoot” method, a short X-ray sweep around the positioned breast, to acquire nine exposures. The tube comes to a complete stop before capturing each exposure, removing potential tube motion, reducing blur and increasing image sharpness. Research shows 3D mammography can also improve cancer detection in patients with dense breasts. SenoClaire separates tissues and reduces overlapping of structures, enabling better characterization of malignant and benign findings compared with traditional 2D mammography.
3T MRI AT BROWARD HEALTH
The introduction of GE Healthcare’s Discovery 750w, a wide-bore 3T MRI, at the Broward Health Orthopedic Sports Medicine Center, provides some of the most innovative diagnostic capabilities, uncompromised image quality and improved workflow. The system also offers increased patient comfort to help minimize anxiety and motion – both key elements in the negative association many patients have with the MRI process.
The 3T MRI offers a comfortable, open experience with unique key features, including flexible designs that comfortably embrace the patient, comfort tilt for brain and neck examinations, reduced exam times through fewer coil exchanges and variable density padding to help minimize pressure points. With the help of GE’s Silent Scan technology, the 3T MRI also decreases noise generated during MRI scans. In addition, the MRI Caring Suite embraces modern technology by offering patients an iPad to control sophisticated LED accent lights, music and high-definition images to aid in relaxation.
The 3T MRI is particularly valuable for orthopedic patients who need high resolution imaging around implants, hip and knee replacements and small joints, as well as those who tend to be claustrophobic or too large to fit comfortably in a traditional MRI.
Multivisceral Organ Transplant and New Patient Unit
As one of the largest pediatric transplant programs in the U.S., the Miami Transplant Institute (MTI) at Jackson Health System’s Holtz Children’s Hospital is considered a global provider of the highest caliber of care.
Using some of the most advanced transplant procedures, MTI is considered one of the leading transplant centers in the world – having performed half of the world’s experience in intestinal and multivisceral transplant.
MTI is a collaborative endeavor between University of Miami Health System/Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine and Jackson Memorial Hospital. MTI is the only center in the state to perform 15 – 20 intestinal and multivisceral transplants per year. A multidisciplinary team of medical professionals and patient advocates work together to increase access to transplantation and improve quality of life.
The institute recently unveiled a new, $35 million patient unit with all new features, a hotel-like atmosphere, leading-edge equipment, 25 private rooms, a physical therapy room and amenities for patients, families and visitors.
Origins MAP Recovery Support System
West Palm Beach-based Origins Behavioral Healthcare has created a MAP Program customized for the specific use of each of its substance abuse addiction patients. The program is a 15-month post-discharge recovery support system that facilitates the family and patient’s transition from in-patient treatment into a new life of recovery.
Recognizing that tackling addiction requires more than just willpower; it’s a continuous process of support, maintenance, and structure. The focus is on identifying behaviors that can lead to relapse and providing informed, compassionate support, so the addict can make the changes necessary to prevent a return to the desperate life of using and its consequences.
The phone and video conference-based MAP Program utilizes highly trained Peer Recovery Support Specialists and clinically developed, algorithm-driven software to guide and support clients and their families. Origins works with addicts and their families to identify relapse behaviors and provide the support they need. The goal is to help the addict and the family transition to a balanced, healthy life – especially in the first stages of recovery.
Each addict is assigned a MAP Specialist to provide guidance and support through weekly phone sessions. The specialists, who are all more than three years into their own recovery, have the primary goals of supporting the addict and to watch for early signs of a relapse so they can help the addict to course correct before a slip occurs. Long-term post treatment support greatly improves the odds of staying sober, and an ongoing relationship with someone in long-term recovery is a powerful resource.
The program uses algorithm-driven software which allows them to collect and analyze data on every person they work with; more effectively track the progress of each case; and see which areas are doing well and which need attention.
Major expansion at Baptist Health CARDIAC Center
Baptist Health South Florida’s Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute launched an expansion in April that will add new services for patients and ensure that the institute remains at the forefront of innovative cardiovascular care.
The $100 million project includes the enlargement of Baptist Hospital’s Surgery Center with six large operating rooms dedicated to neuroscience, cardiac and robotic surgery.
�The expansion will be a great gift for our community and beyond,” says Barry Katzen, M.D., the Institute’s founder and medical director. “We will be able to conduct more research, make discoveries that could transform how cardiovascular care is delivered and offer advanced services.”
New programs planned by the Institute include a National Center for Aneurysm Therapy, Center for Advanced Endovascular Therapies and Center for Structural Heart Therapy. Most areas of the existing facility also will be renovated and four advanced endovascular procedure suites will be added.
