Photo Gallery: Royal Caribbean’s $250 million CocoCay is a new money maker

Royal Caribbean International’s CocoCay in the past was a great relaxing way to spend a day in the sun and enjoy a barbecue brought over from the ship. That’s changed radically with a $250 million makeover of the Bahamian island, which is also known as Little Stirrup Cay.

The Perfect Day at CocoCay, as Royal Caribbean is branding it, has opened with North America’s tallest waterslide at 135 feet and the Caribbean’s largest wave pool. The Up, Up and Away helium balloon will take visitors 450 feet up in the air and a zip line course goes 1,600 feet.

From a business standpoint, Royal Caribbean appears to offer a major experience differentiator to pitch  customers. I can see parents asking kids whether they want to go on a Disney ship and see Mickey Mouse or go on the private island and have fun at a fabulous water park. Royal Caribbean is apparently planning more of these type of islands in other parts of the world.

Royal Caribbean is also getting a stream of new revenue, according to Travel Weekly. The water park will cost $44 to $99 per person a day and $39 to $74 for half a day. The zip line will cost $79 to $139 a ride. A combo of the two will cost $99 to $179. The observation balloon will cost $39 to $99 for those 13 and over. The real topper is a cabana for up to eight people, priced at $1,500 during peak season.

If you don’t want to spend a lot of money, you can still enjoy the swimming lagoon, a water play area, sports courts and five restaurants for the cost of your cruise fare.

One of the challenges for cruise ships is getting repeat travelers excited about going again. For example, I’ve had enough visits to Nassau and Freeport to last a lifetime. I run into people on ships who don’t even bother getting offer anymore. CocoCay will address this challenge well, particularly for younger people and their families. Royal Caribbean can keep a lot of revenue rather than splitting it with tour operators.

CocoCay will likely be attractive to Floridian’s looking for a quick getaway. The CocoCay website is offering three night Bahamas cruises from Miami starting from $301 in September and four nights from $330.

Here are all the details from the press release:

BIOGRAPHY

Drew Limsky joined Lifestyle Media Group in August 2020 as Editor-in-Chief of South Florida Business & Wealth. His first issue of SFBW, October 2020, heralded a reimagined structure, with new content categories and a slew of fresh visual themes. “As sort of a cross between Forbes and Robb Report, with a dash of GQ and Vogue,” Limsky says, “SFBW reflects South Florida’s increasingly sophisticated and dynamic business and cultural landscape.”

Limsky, an avid traveler, swimmer and film buff who holds a law degree and Ph.D. from New York University, likes to say, “I’m a doctor, but I can’t operate—except on your brand.” He wrote his dissertation on the nonfiction work of Joan Didion. Prior to that, Limsky received his B.A. in English, summa cum laude, from Emory University and earned his M.A. in literature at American University in connection with a Masters Scholar Award fellowship.

Limsky came to SFBW at the apex of a storied career in journalism and publishing that includes six previous lead editorial roles, including for some of the world’s best-known brands. He served as global editor-in-chief of Lexus magazine, founding editor-in-chief of custom lifestyle magazines for Cadillac and Holland America Line, and was the founding editor-in-chief of Modern Luxury Interiors South Florida. He also was the executive editor for B2B magazines for Acura and Honda Financial Services, and he served as travel editor for Conde Nast. Magazines under Limsky’s editorship have garnered more than 75 industry awards.
